According to a new report, the director of Universal’s upcoming Candyman reboot Nia DaCosta will be taking on directing duties for the 2019 hit Captain Marvel sequel. Prior to DaCosta, directing duo Anne Bowden and Ryan Fleck were set to return to the sequel set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After a creative shakeup for the sequel, Marvel Studios and the directors parted ways in good terms.

The sequel was written by WandaVision scribe Megan McDonnell, with little known about the plot and setting of the film. The first film found Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) suffering from amnesia while working as an elite soldier for the Kree during an ongoing conflict with the Skrulls. As Danvers strived to regain her memory, her journey took her back to her homeworld of Earth to team up with the likes of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

Larson is set to return to the sequel, with rumors running wild, with some claiming Ms. Marvel will appear in the film. It is expected to hit theaters on July 8, 2022, indicating that production will begin sometime in mid-2021.

DaCosta will become the first black female to direct an entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
