It’s hard to believe we’re still three months away from the next installment of the MCU, Black Widow. But the movie’s director, Cate Shortland, has recently revealed some details on the movie that are sure to ease the wait. But before we continue, a SPOILER warning for Avengers: Endgame.

In an interview with Empire, Shortland has shed some light into the events that will take place in the movie as well as plans for the future, more specifically in regards to Florence Pugh’s role as Yelena Belova:

[Kevin Feige] realised that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction, (…) And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.”

It seems the movie will a kind of passing of the torch, as Pugh’s character is likely to take on the role of Black Widow after the original Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson,  dies in Avengers: Endgame. It seems with this movie, Thor: Ragnarok and many of the Disney+ shows, it seems that Marvel is setting up successors to the original six Avengers, since most are either dead or retired.

Shortland also adressed Natasha Romanoff’s death and how it will tie-in to Black Widow:

In Endgame, the fans were upset that Natasha did not have a funeral. Whereas Scarlett, when I spoke to her about it, said Natasha wouldn’t have wanted a funeral. She’s too private, and anyway, people don’t really know who she is. So what we did in this film was allow the ending to be the grief the individuals felt, rather than a big public outpouring. I think that’s a fitting ending for her.”

Black Widow, directed by Cate Shortland, stars Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, William Hurt and Ray Winstone and it’s the 24th installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie will hit theaters on November 6, 2020.
