UPDATE 06/18/20: The Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard (Bad Times At The El Royale) has been tapped to pen the screenplay for the upcoming adaption of author Andy Weir’s next, yet-to-be-titled film referred to as “Project Hail Mary” at both the publisher and at MGM. The Hollywood Reporter broke this news
ORIGINAL: MGM recently brought on veteran writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Into The Spider-Verse) to direct and produce famed author Andy Weir’s next. Weir is the author behind the New York Times Best Seller “The Martian,” adapted in 2015 by 20th Century Fox, and starring Matt Damon.
This time around, mega movie star Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049) is set to portray the main antagonist, who in the novel, is said to be, “a solitary … astronaut on a space ship who is tasked with saving the planet,” (Variety). The novel is scheduled to release in the spring of 2021, and is currently being referred to as “Project Hail Mary” at the novel’s publisher, Random House.
Amy Pascal will also work alongside Miller and Lord as producer, as well as author Andy Weir, Ken Kao, and Aditya Sood. It is reported that Gosling lobbied hard for Lord and Miller to direct the film, but this was made difficult due to the duo’s new “first-look” deal with Universal. After some negotiations, Universal was willing to allow an exception in the deal for this project to move forward.
