If you want what you so much desire, you must work hard for it.

What We Do in the Shadows‘s eighth episode of its second season is titled “Collaboration;” it is written by Sam Johnson and Chris Marcil, and directed by Yana Gorskaya.

Some spoilers ahead for those of you who are not caught up with the episode or the series. If you haven’t done either, you should get to that now, then return to this article!

This week’s episode of the comedy-horror vampire series gets its title from Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) and Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry) joining together in a musical cover band duo, and energy vampire Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) manipulates this to his advantage because “nothing unlocks anger and boredom quite like old-timey music.”

Meanwhile, Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak) deals with a former vampire familiar reluctantly allows his current one, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), to join a supposed familiar-turned-vampire, Celeste. The episode also gets its title from Guillermo helping with Celeste in the past with her own vampire master.

Guillermo and Colin Robinson develop further as characters: Guillermo realizes he might be just stuck in his position as his master’s familiar but demands respect, appreciation, and other nourishment; and the energy vampire learns of more ways to drain the life energy when he takes Cravensworth and his wife to an open mic event, where their attempts at bringing levity to an audience fail.

“Collaboration” is not the strongest episode, although it does have its moments. Celeste tries to vape smoke with blood juices but she is later revealed to not have been transformed into a vampire. There is hope for Guillermo, as Nandor’s previous familiar is now turned into a vampire.

7.5/10
