Today, DiscussingFilm learned that Crazy Rich Asians star and senior correspondent for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show was cast in Marvel’s upcoming Shang Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings in an unknown role. Chieng is known for his roles on the 2017 ABC show Ronny Chieng: International Student. He also is known for his standup, with a Netflix special coming soon to the streaming service.
While production hardly began prior to being shut down due to the global coronavirus outbreak, a few key details had been revealed. To start, the film would be entering production in Australia, and will feature the true Mandarin as well as his organization Ten Rings.
The organization has been teased for some time in the Iron Man franchise, with the third installment of the franchise even introducing two versions of the Mandarin. When audiences failed to accept the main antagonist Aldrich Killian was the “true” Mandarin, Marvel produced a short video titled All Hail The King, which briefly mentioned that the true Mandarin was still out there.
With the addition of Chieng to the cast, it wouldn’t be a farfetched assumption that there will be quite a bit of humor mixed into the action of the film, which has paid off well for Marvel in the past, most notably with Thor Ragnarok. Shang Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, and Tony Chiu-Wai Leung with Destin Daniel Cretin at the helm of the project written by Dave Callaham.
