Diamond Comic Distributors, the primary and largest comic book distribution company, has sent word to comic publishers and comic shops across the country, notifying that they will not be receiving any more shipments of new books to distribute. The move comes during an extremely rough time for local comic shops across the country. With Stay Home orders and lockdowns in place nationwide, local comic shops have been forced to shutter their doors, owners praying that they will make it through to the other side.
Comics preparing for shipments already in D.C.D. warehouses will continue to be shipped until April 1st, but this is still subject to change.
Diamond Comic Distributors acts as a third-party distributor for many comic publishers in the English-speaking world. In some cases, such as the cases of Marvel Entertainment and DC Comics, D.C.D. retains exclusive rights to distribute new comic books to retailers.
The decision to halt shipments of new comics beyond April 1st can have a drastic and lasting impact on the comic industry. While the most likely solution for publishers will be to turn to digital releases, one can hope some of the larger publishers can begin shipping directly to local comic shops for the time-being. Hopefully, if this is a viable option for publishers and retailers alike, any exclusive distribution rights held by Diamond Comic Distributors will be waived in order to help save these small businesses and backbone of the comic book industry.
