Last episode viewers saw Jamie Fraser having to part ways with Murtagh Fitzgibbons, his godfather, and leader of the Regulators. In this episode, viewers find out where Murtagh went after saying goodbye to Jamie, and he isn’t hiding, which makes matters for Jamie much harder.

The episode begins when Regulators punish two men, at night and in front of all the town to see, for enforcing a tax Regulators felt was unjust. Before word about the incident gets to Jamie, he and Lt. Knox are seeking Murtagh, per orders of Governor Tryon, the news that Fitzgibbons and two other men were captured takes them to this town. Jamie is met with three men, who he had previously offered land on Fraser’s Ridge. In a burst of anger, Lt. Know stabs the man claiming to be Murtagh. Jamie realizes how complicated everything has gotten and how he is stuck between fulfilling his oath (to protect his family) and protecting Murtagh.

Storyline-wise, this episode is quite balanced as it follows the different storylines in the Fraser family. It is slowly developing each character’s arc for this season. It also brings out an important discussion for the MacKenzies: should they go back to the future?

A nice surprise in this episode is Claire’s relationship with Marsali. It’s heartwarming when thinking about how close they’ve gotten, even though their start was a rocky one. Marsali is a character who’s surely started to grow on viewers and it will be satisfying to see this character further developed and become something outside of a wife and mother. What will certainly be hard to watch is Brianna’s upcoming arc. This episode ends with Stephen Bonnet claiming he is a father, after almost killing a man in a sort of fight club. This could only mean that he will look for Brianna and Jeremiah, which will surely be heartbreaking to watch.

The last episode was just a small moment of happiness before everything falls apart and episode 2 is just the introduction of what’s to come.

Score: 7/10
