Where in the Multiverse is Barry Allen? ‘The Flash’ Director Andrés Muschietti Hints at Whereabouts

Our favorite scarlet speedster Barry Allen, as portrayed by Ezra Miller in Warner Brothers/DC Films, will be stuck in the speedforce for another 2 years. However, a spark has generated from beyond our universe through a lightning rod known none other to be Andrés Muschietti, director of The Flash. In a recent interview with The Hashtag Show, he spoke to the fact that the film will depict “a different version of Flashpoint” than we’re expecting. To brainstorm what that means, we could consider both Flashpoint itself and what we’ve seen from DC Films so far.

In the Flashpoint comic, Barry Allen wakes up in an alternate reality in which both he and his fellow characters in the DC Comics universe are vastly different. Notable changes include:

• The death of Bruce Wayne instead of his father and mother, causing them to become Batman and Joker respectively
• Cyborg’s popularity reaching that of Superman’s
• Kal-El lands in Metropolis instead of the Kent farm and is experimented on by the government
• Wonder Woman and Aquaman are leading a war between Themyscira and Atlantis respectively

Thinking about all who we have seen in the films thus far (and how broken continuity has become due to events that have transpired in the real world) here are some theories in response to important plot points that I have:

• Since the Batman (who was and is older that Pattinson) has been recast and the Joker has been recently envisioned in his own solo outing, we could at the very least see Thomas Wayne (possibly portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) become Batman, but no guarantees
• Cyborg could possibly reach Superman-level hype, however, since we still need more from both of these characters, Cyborg especially, this may not factor into the story as much
• Superman’s presence on screen is pending the return of Henry Cavill, so he may be even featured less so, giving Cyborg more of a story to be developed. Instead, though, we could get another, more sizeable glimpse of a possible future in which Superman is evil and reigns supreme that was teased in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
• The conflict between Wonder Woman and Aquaman is at a high potential, however the film’s focus should be on those that have not been delved into much yet (side note: I do hope we get a hint of time travel in this universe from Wonder Woman 1984 since Steve Trevor somehow returns. Also, this was a period in which time travel was all the rage)

Other points include variations on Harley Quinn possibly aligning with heroes like Cyborg as well as Shazam and the Shazam kids. The narrative overall, though, needs to focus on Barry Allen and understanding his character since he is another character, like Cyborg, that hasn’t had much depth. From what I remember, early on, Cyborg and The Flash were to team up in one of their solo outings. If Allen seeks out Stone and his resources at STAR Labs instead of Thomas Wayne, it could really help Cyborg develop as well! Most of all, here’s to hoping we’ll see the Reverse Flash on the big screen!

I have to wonder if this will act as a soft reboot, realigning the universe they may be creating, and possibly making sense of what’s happened by creating the multiverse DC popularized through its comics.
