In the last year, there has been plenty of speculation as to where the Marvel Cinematic Universe will go in Phase 4. One of many routes that will be taken that began back in 2014 with Guardians of the Galaxy is stories that venture into the cosmos. The stars seem to be aligning for this, as the MCU might be looking to release The Eternals in 2020. The plot details are as follows:

The story of ‘THE ETERNALS’ is set millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered individuals as well as more villainous off-shoots known as Deviants. The two groups went on to battle each other throughout history to see which would eventually become the ultimate race. The story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.

By the looks of this synopsis, the film seems like a prequel of the MCU and could be very telling of what other off-shoots may come from it. I’m particularly leaning towards the X-gene coming into the fray through this film and surfacing somehow in the present. Maybe Scarlet Witch is a descendant (and through her series will discover her lineage) whose X-gene was activated by the mind stone. Chloé Zhao (director of 2017’s critically-acclaimed The Rider) as well as Matthew and Ryan Firpo (Blacklist’s top writers of 2017) are the minds behind the film. My expectation is they’ll deliver a compelling narrative on both the advantages and burdens the genetic experimentation has had on the characters and societies in focus.

The news of Black Widow‘s release possibly being slated for May 1, 2020 came with The Eternals projected arrival for November 6th of that same year. With this in mind, production should begin soon and casting should occur even sooner.

What do you think of these shimmers in the cosmos? How do you think the story could be teased in coming films like Avengers 4? How do you think this installment in the MCU will impact its past, present and future? Let us know your thoughts on Twitter @geekmotivation and follow us for more news like this!
