Games based on the LEGO IP have been in production since 1995, but it wouldn’t be until the release of LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game ten years later that their games would become household names. The original game followed the events of Episodes I-III, with the sequel covering Episodes IV-VI.
Since their entry into licensed properties, TT Games has produced a plethora of LEGO games based on hot commodities like Batman, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and even a crossover with Rock Band. But the Star Wars games remain to be among their most popular series.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the sixth entry in LEGO’s Star Wars lineup and is essentially a remake of LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga (which covered Episodes I-VI), with the additions of The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker, the latter two having never been adapted into the LEGO game format until now.
But the game isn’t just a remake. TT Games has taken the opportunity to create what is basically an entirely brand new gaming experience, and their final result isn’t only the best LEGO Star Wars game, but the best LEGO game!
The Best LEGO Game Ever Made!
I’ve always had an issue with LEGO games because I found them to be borderline unplayable alone, not that they were bad, but I always found them to be more enjoyable when played with a friend. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is a great exception because this game is huge! Each level has plenty for you to explore and discover with side-missions, hidden items, and a ton of easter eggs and gags. There is so much to do that I had no issue playing solo.
The game is so large that I have barely cracked its surface. I’ve been so busy collecting studs and completing side-quests that I’ve only completed The Phantom Menace and I’m barely halfway into Attack of the Clones. However, to see how the different trilogies compare to one another I skipped ahead to A New Hope and The Force Awakens.
While the levels of previous Star Wars games felt similar to a point, each level in The Skywalker Saga almost feels unique with lively characters from the film often wandering around the environment and fantastic puzzles to engage you.
More Than Replayable
Each Star Wars movie features five levels adding up to forty-five levels in total. At first glance, this might not sound like a lot, but each level is divided into different locations and then add on the side-missions, collectible items like the mini-kits and datapads all help pad the game.
There is so much pact in that replayability has been beautifully built-in. There is so much that you’ll miss as you play, especially if you’re concentrating on side-quests and the main story missions.
A Few Setbacks
My main gripes with past LEGO games was the over-reliance on slapstick humour, but it was one of my favourite aspects of The Skywalker Saga and each level has made me laugh at least a few times.
My gripe with this game comes with the voice acting. This is the second LEGO Star Wars game, after the standalone adaptation of The Force Awakens, to feature full voice acting, aaaaaaaaand… it’s mostly good. To be honest, the voice acting is excellent, but a lot of the characters don’t sound like who they’re supposed to be.
As of now, the biggest mistake comes with the lack of online co-op support. It’s one of the best games to play with friends and excluding friends who may have to play together online due to distance is a silly thing to do. Despite that, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is still a fantastic experience that will have you laughing, and replaying levels over and over again, keeping you occupied for many hours.
