After a few less-than impressive attempts to adapt one of the most beloved superhero teams in comics, Twentieth Century Fox still retains the rights to the Fantastic Four. As if the critical failures weren’t enough, the films themselves are responsible for something far more detrimental: the discontinuation of Fantastic Four comics.
Marvel, supporting with data, claimed that Fantastic Four comics stopped because they had poor sales. Jonathan Hickman, writer of Fantastic Four, in an interview with Newsarama, said otherwise:
“I think it’s pretty common knowledge at this point that Marvel isn’t publishing Fantastic Four because of their disagreement with Fox. While it bums me out, I completely understand because, well, it isn’t like they’re not acting out of cause. Fox needs to do a better job there.”
I made my opinion pretty clear at the beginning, the films aren’t good. The Doctor Doom film mentioned at San Diego Comic Con is curious because although adaptations for these characters are on a terrible trend, Noah Hawley is attached. If Legion is as good as everyone says I’ll stay hopeful. I do have my criticism that you can’t have one without the other: like Venom without Spider-Man, I can’t imagine Doom without the Fantastic Four. But if the origin is repurposed well I could get behind it. Regardless, I really want them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I’m sure all of us do for the sake of quality films, a larger universe, and resurrecting the comics.
In the comics, we last saw a retired Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, and the rest of the Richards Family doing greater things in the multiverse. Furthermore, Human Torch and The Thing are still in the mainstream universe.
