Back in the early 1990s, Marvel wasn’t making too many movies, let alone a monstrous 23-film franchise built over a decade. But, the comic company was interested in breaking onto the silver screen.

Enter Quentin Tarantino. Interested in developing a Marvel Comics property, Tarantino expressed interest in creating an adaption of Luke Cage, a.k.a. Power Man, starring Laurence Fishbourne. Unfortunately, the film never came to fruition, with little knowledge of why.

Now, Tarantino has opened up about why the film was never produced on Amy Schumer’s podcast 3 Girls 1 Keith. Check out his quote below!

“‘What dissuaded me … was my comic-geek friends talked me out of it,” Tarantino went on. “Because I had an idea that Larry Fishbourne would’ve been the perfect guy to play Luke Cage. But all my friends were like, ‘It’s got to be Wesley Snipes.’ And I go, ‘Look, I like Wesley Snipes, but Larry Fishbourne is practically Marlon Brando. I think Fish is the man.’ And they’re like, ‘Yeah, but he’d have to get in shape in a big way. Snipes is that way already!’”

So Tarantino gave into peer pressure, although his friends may have been correct. As history shows, Wesley Snipes went on to portray the vampire hunter Blade in the Marvel live-action flick of the same name. Was it evident Snipes would have been the go-to choice for Marvel? Not really, but their decision to cast the actor just a few short years after Tarantino’s idea fell apart leads one to speculate.

Would you have liked to see Laurence Fishbourne play Luke Cage in a film directed by Quentin Tarantino? Let us know your thoughts below! And be sure to follow The Cinema Spot on Twitter (@TheCinemaSpot) and Instagram (@thecinemaspot_) for all the latest Marvel news!
